More Info: COURSE OVERVIEW: This course provides an introduction to Social and Applied Psychology. Social Psychology is concerned with the understanding and explanation of human social behaviour. Understanding social behaviour requires the investigation of many phenomena, ranging from the way individuals perceive and think about the social world, the way they form and maintain social relationships, to the way they think and act in group settings. Applied Psychology is concerned with using the empirical and theoretical insights from psychology to provide ways of addressing real social issues and problems. By using theoretical approaches to provide solutions to real problems where social psychology has a role, the solutions may be more likely to succeed; and those theories receive evaluation and assessment in the most rigorous manner possible. Core Syllabus: An introduction to major perspectives on social and applied psychology, concerned with theories and concepts that are used to explain social perception, cognition and behaviour, and the application of such theories to real, practical, social problems. Course Content: Theories and concepts such as: personality, self and identity; relationships, bonds and the family; making sense of the social world; communication, influence and persuasion; groups and organisations. Applications such as: health and illness, sexuality and intimate relationships; crime and legal psychology; media effects; leadership and motivation in organisations; crowds and inter-cultural relations.
