Thesis Title: New Mappings: The Cultural Dissemination of Science Fiction in Postmodern Culture
About
My research centers on cultural transformations in general, especially the productive interface between so-called high and low culture. Genre fictions typically re-invigorate experimental forms, just as experimental forms provide material for genre fictions to plunder in their constant need for rejuvenation. Similarly, alternative cultures exist in a constant productive struggle with mainstream and dominant culture, creating fluctuations of subversion, detournement, incorporation and recuperation.
I'm fascinated by positive absences; things that are not clearly there yet still have a huge impact on the way we understand our world. Shadows, ghosts, noises, holes and similar ontologically unstable objects are usually ignored in our culture while still serving a significant function.
Methodologically, I follow the dictum that there is always something cultural about texts and something textual about culture. Employing a deconstructive materialism, I attempt to probe the boundaries of texts and culture in order to better understand the way texts aestheticize culture and culture aestheticizes texts.
